On Mother's Day this year wyy decided to give mummy some exercise time.
It was great.
Daddy chin and Mummy xiu decided that since wyy didn't take her usual morning nap yesterday, she won't need it on sunday and planned a nice trip to the beach instead. So daddy chin and Mummy xiu decided to try cycling again.
Again cos this would be the third attempt at cycling with wyy.
Attempt 1: Nov 07
We cycled to the Seafood center from Macs (about 2k?) before wyy refused to sit on the chair anymore and we had to push her back. Tough work man juggling 2 bicycles, one baby who had to be carried.
Attempt 2: Jan 08
We cycled even less this time. Just got past UDMC chalets (or whatever name they are called now) before she made noise. Luckily this time Mummy xiu was jogging so coming back was ok. Just disappointing
Attempt 3: 11 May 08 SUCCESS!
We cycled all the way to the sea sports club and then all the way back for a full 1 hour! We sang happy songs most of the way and wyy even hummed along. While we were not singing she would look around and smile - taking in the view and the enjoying the breeze. That was so much fun! We can now do it more often.Yeah!

vocabulary
wyy has been increasing her vocabulary steadily... though not sounding exactly the way we know the words.
Wyy dictionary includes
1. Ah ma: pronounced very well. Unfortunately, she sometimes points to me, yeechin, doreen, hweenak, nanda ethan and calls us ah-ma!
2. Dada:(for Daddy) second most accurate. Somehow she likes to also points to photographs and call da-da...even though most of them don't have no da da in them
3. Ma ma: seldom used. Only in panic mode does she call for ma ma... Usually ma ma is dada or ah-ma
4. Ya ya (which means flower): identifies it accurately. Can recognise it in books, the real thing, as a drawing... only thing is ya ya really does not sound like flower....
5. sheep
6. dog
7. ah-tan: (for Ethan) just realised last weekend that she was calling Ethan a-tan. was wondering what she was talking about chanting ah-tan ah-tan at dinner
8. sheet : (for socks) Sorta controversial cos she doesn't use it that frequently but the last 3 times she said sheet (or shit) she was pointing to her socks. but it is kinda like ya ya...
9. bag : especially when she likes to rummage through our stuff.

The Great Outdoors
After 2 days of CNY, the trio had few places left to visit...
so mummy xiu and daddy chin decided to go out!
No shopping malls cos wyy just recovered (or is still recovering from her flu, cough, throat infection).
On Sat...
The little family had a picnic at East Coast Park.
It was a small affair. The picnic consisted of
1 x baby lunch
1 x apple
1 x foot long subway sandwich meal
2 x water bottle (one for wyy and one for daddy chin & mummy xiu)
1 x chupa chup inflatable lolipop
1 x toy
2 x magazine (bought from the east coast 7 eleven)
on a large tarpaulin sheet.
We paled in comparisons to the other malay families next to us who looked liked they lived there with tents, pots of food and clothes blowing in the breeze.
It was kinda relaxing with e sea breeze but nothing is truly relaxing with 13 month old toddler walking unsteadily around the tarpaulin sheet. A nice way to spend the afternoon.

The trio went to Jacob Ballas Chilren's Garden
It was a great idea! A garden specially designed for children.
Wyy was a little too young for the playground but she enjoyed herself just walking around.
Think we will definitely go back.

Toddler
Last weekend would be considered the weekend wyy started walking...
On friday night, wyy walked all the way from the playroom to the edge of the living room.
On her own
Without falling.
Too bad mummy xiu and daddy chin were not home yet to witness.
Apparently she was very pleased with herself after the feat.
Mummy xiu tried to get wyy to walk the same distance on sat but the trick could not be repeated. Wyy did walk about 6-7 steps to patronise mummy
Soon Sunday came and she was eager to walk everywhere.
There was still no long distance walk like last friday, but she was up and about more often.
Yay! Finally wyy is a toddler

DOG
Wyy learnt a new word today.
DOG.
Daddy chin was pointing to her dog 'softtoy'(which is about 5cm tall) and saying DOG and she repeated it. DOG. And in case daddy chin didn't hear her the first time, she repeated it again. DOG. Then she took the toy, crawled to me in the kitchen and said it again. DOG.
Whoa! She got it! Her first noun!
To reinforce the word/imagery, daddy chin showed her a dog "piggy bank" and said DOG. She repeated after us. DOG. Hmm. i think she understands!
ok. so daddy chin and mummy xiu decided it was enough teaching DOG and went downstairs for lunch. While chatting, daddy chin and mummy xiu mentioned the word DOG. Immediately the little one crawled to the "playroom", picked up her dog 'softtoy' brought it to us and said DOG.
Yay! Her first real word. Well she kinda knew "bye" (which she used to use frequently but has somehow forgotten), ah-ma (which she calls quite accurately) but this is an object. And the fact that she could associate it with a soft toy and a hard piggy bank shows that she can kinda understand.

go-go-bambini
Daddy chin and Mummy xiu were wondering where to bring lil one to today...
Botanic gardens?
They have a new section for kids. Hmm... wyy is still a toddler.
Sentosa?
Daddy chin thot wyy can build sandcastles. All mummy xiu could think about was the aftermath...
Swimming at waterplace?
Wyy just played in the pool at cousin Ethan's yest. and her costume was still in the wash.
Finally we decided to go to go go bambini at dempsey.
Wyy was supposed to meet auntie rosemary and sean there yest but sean fell sick and it got postponed. It was fun! They had a place for 0-3years. It too her a while to warm up though. In the beginning she was contented to sit there and hold 2 balls in her hand. When we brought her into the ball pool, she also just sat there with daddy chin. When her engines got running she was peeping into the house, and even crawled back to the ball pool.
Next week... lucky wyy will get to go there again.

moving on...
no need to lug a big heavy bag to work everyday
no need to spend $50 on plain t-shirts with extra holes
no more shorter lunch breaks and after work breaks
...
but moving on also means
no more being the nutrition and antibodies provider
no more cuddling up with wyy when she nurses
no more having wyy play with my hair or sticking her fingers into my nostrils when she lies down on my lap
no more seeing wyy stick out her tongue between milk breaks
i'm going miss being this special experience but this is a good time to move on.
The sleep training was so successful, we have managed to dissociate sleeping from milk and mummy xiu and it seems that wyy is ready to let go.
so mummy xiu is letting go too...

On the first day of Christmas
Sleeping habits
Daddy chin and Mummy xiu embarked on a sleep training program for wenyinyin on Thursday night.
The concept is simple - it is to teach wyy to sleep on her own in her room.
The method - put her in her cot at bedtime and check in on her occasionally, with the time between each checks further and further apart.
Some call it the "Cry it out"... i don't want to call it that cos the idea is not to cry it out.
Day 1 - Thursday 3 Jan
Daddy chin and Mummy xiu came home extremely early at 8pm.
Played with wyy in her room, read her stories.
8.30 - put her in her cot. wyy cries
8.33 - [check in]wyy crying so hard she was perspiring all over.
8.35 - leave crying wyy in her room
8.40 - [check in] wyy wet all over with perspiration. clinging and hugging mummy tight
8.42 - leave crying wyy in her room.
8.52 - wyy falls asleep.
hmm. 22 mins. not bad. Was expecting it to take 2 hours....
2.50 - wyy wakes up. daddy chin gives her milk from the bottle. she drinks some.
2.55 - wyy placed in her cot. crying
2.58 - [check in] wyy hugging mummy tight when i come in.
3.00 - mummy xiu leaves crying wyy. "Discussion" with angry grandmother. wyy still wailing
3.05 - [check in] wyy comforted by mummy's appearance and calms down abit.
3.06 - mummy xiu leaves crying wyy
3.16 - [check in] wyy still standing up
3.17 - mummy xiu leaves room
3.27 - [check in] wyy slowly moving down onto the mattress. still whimpering
3.35 - wyy falls asleep.
45 min. longer than the last. the 45 mins felt very long....
Day 2 - Friday 4 Jan
Mummy xiu leaves specific instructions for nap times. Nanny Nanda to follow timing. and if baby does not sleep after 30 mins. to let her play.
NAP 1 @9.30
9.30 - NN leaves baby in her room. On the floor. No noise.
9.33 - NN checks on baby. Baby not sleeping. Playing quietly with her toys... Ha ha

10.00 - wyy sleeps
30 mins.... not bad
NAP 2 @2.15
Wyy falls asleep in 15 mins. Wah. Progress. Even nanda was pleasantly surprised
BEDTIME
8.00 - Mummy xiu and Daddy chin rushes home again to put wyy to bed. wyy didn't finish her milk after seeing mummy xiu. oops. All play with puzzles, mummy xiu attempts to tell Stories to disinterested wyy.
8.45 - wyy placed in cot. cries. wails. Mummy xiu, Daddy chin and NN leaves.

Taking stock
It's the 2nd January 2008
2007 has been a special year.
All cos of wenyinyin.
She has grown from a little baby to a little toddler.
An adventurous, outspoken, curious one at that.
I'd miss my baby.
Time flies by so fast.
Before i knew it she could flip over, stand up, crawl...
now in eager anticipation of her first firm steps.
Being parents is tough work i kid you not. But really super rewarding.
I love being a MUM!
